2026-27 Ensemble Placements

We have an exciting year ahead with all of our concert and jazz ensembles. All students will be challenged with music that will inspire them to grow as musicians, express their emotions through music, and work hard with their fellow musicians to create something beautiful.

Students should plan to check with their counselor in July to ensure that they are placed in the correct band class period according to the ensemble rosters. If there are class conflicts, work with your counselor and Ms. Leimer to get these resolved before school starts. Taking classes online through VOL or FLVS can relieve some schedule issues and allow you more flexibility with your daily schedule.

ALL students are strongly encouraged to take the 1/2 credit Personal Fitness class online this summer (if you haven't already done so). This is a graduation requirement. Students will receive a PE waiver for the 1/2 credit Team Sports class by participating in Marching Band. Students are also strongly encouraged to take the 1/2 credit Personal Finance class online as well so that they don't have to use one of their 7 in-person classes to meet this graduation requirement. Taking these classes online allows you to take more band classes or other electives that you would like to explore. If you have any questions, please reach out to Ms. Leimer via email ([email protected]).

Ensemble Placement vs. Band Class Section - a brief explanation:
For incoming high school students, there can be some confusion around the band class section (Band 2, Jazz Ens 1, Eurhy 1, Pre-IB Music 1) and ensemble placements. Your section refers to the credit you will receive on your transcript. You cannot receive the same credit more than once, so you will move through a progression of sections as you move through high school band. These are sequential, but when students take more than one band class in a year, they sometimes move quickly through the sequence. As freshmen, students will be in either "Band 2" or "Pre-IB Music 1", regardless of what period they have for band. This ensures that students will get to Band 5H by the time they are a senior. IB juniors and seniors take "IB Music 1" and "IB Music 2." For jazz, students start with "Jazz Ens 1" and move up each year until they reach "Jazz Ens 4H" as a senior. Each concert band class has sections of Band 2, 3, 4, 5H, 6H, Orch 5H & 6H, Instr Ens 4H, etc. Each jazz class has Jazz 1-4H. Colorguard students take "Eurhythmics" 1, 2, 3, or 4 depending on what grade they are in.

It is important that you are placed in the correct CLASS PERIOD for band/guard as the class periods are by ensemble placement. Please refer to the schedule below and the ensemble rosters to help ensure that you are in the correct class for the 2026-27 school year.

NEW for 2026-27 - Physical & ECG Requirement

Starting next year, Volusia County Schools is requiring ALL marching band students to complete a health physical and ECG prior to marching season. There will be opportunities to attend free events offered through AdventHealth to take care of this requirement, so please be on the lookout for the flyers. You can also take care of this through your primary care physician.

This is REQUIRED to be taken care of BEFORE summer band camp starts at the end of July. Please be proactive and take care of this now.

As part of this process, students must register for their online athletic clearance account and upload their forms from the physical and ECG. Please follow these steps:
1. Register for your account on https://athleticclearance.fhsaahome.org/
2. Upload the EL2 form AND ECG clearance email page (this will arrive at the email you specify when receiving the ECG).
Please read the “Frequently Asked Questions” below and let me know if you have any other questions about this new requirement.

2025-26 Band Class Schedule

Once schedules are released, please verify that you have been placed in the correct band classes according to the following master band schedule:
  • 1st period - Symphonic Band
  • 2nd period - Wind Ensemble
  • 3rd period - Symphonic Winds
  • 4th period - Jazz Ensemble 1 (Advanced)
  • 5th period - Jazz Ensemble 2 (Intermediate)
  • 6th period -  Colorguard (Eurhythmics)
  • 7th period - Jazz Ensemble 3/4 (Developing)
The section (Band 1, Band 2, Eurhythmics 1, etc.) is based off your year in high school band. All first year instrumentalists should be in Band 2 OR Pre-IB Music 1, all first year guard members should be in Eurhythmics 1, and all first year jazzers should be in Jazz Ens 1. The section does not correlate with band placement.

ONLINE CLASS SUGGESTIONS
All students are required to have 1/2 credit of Team Sports and 1/2 credit of Personal Fitness for graduation. Students who participate in Marching Band receive a waiver for the 1/2 credit of Team Sports and it is strongly recommended that band students take the 1/2 credit of Personal Fitness online through FLVS. It is free and easy and can be completed in just a few week over the summer. Don't delay, get this done today!

All students in the Class of 2027 and beyond are required to take a personal finance class for graduation. This is a 1/2 credit class that may be taken online, which is strongly suggested for band students so that they don't lose an elective spot during their school day. The class to take on FLVS is called "Personal Finance and Money Management." Take this over the summer and get it out of the way. The class is easy, but it is a graduation requirement.

Many of our band students choose to take some of their classes online to free up space in their daily class schedule for more band classes (or other electives that they want to try). This is how we are able to have so many students participate in jazz band and second/third concert bands. If you are interested in pursuing this option, please reach out to Ms. Leimer for more information.
